Chapter 18 – Turo

I glared at the screen. Nothing on it made sense to me. I wasn’t an idiot, but I certainly didn’t speak high tech geek. Nik made it all look so effortless.

Nik.

My belly clenched again as I thought of her lying unconscious in the room. Willow and Tali still hadn’t called to let me know she’d woken up yet. I was spinning my wheels here. Spinning my wheels and getting ready to throw my computer across the room.

My phone buzzed.

I snatched it up. “Speak.”

“She’s awake. And pull that stick out of your ass, big brother,” Tali snarled.

Everything inside me relaxed at her first two words. I didn’t even bother to comment on her barb. Nik was awake.

“How is she? When’s she getting released? Does she have someone arranged to pick her up?” Not that it mattered a whole lot. I was going to be the one to pick her up.

“No idea. Call her yourself. After you remove the aforementioned stick. She’s carrying some dark stuff, Turo. Don’t crawl up her ass about it.”

I stilled as I reached for my keys. “What kind of dark stuff?”

Tali heaved a sigh. “I don’t know. She isn’t willing to share it. Not with us girls, at least. But if you make her cry, I swear to Willow’s goddess that I’ll tear you apart.”

I snarled, my lip rising to bare my upper teeth. “I’m not going to make her cry. And she’s mine, T. I can do what I want.”

Tali got quiet.

Shit. Tali being quiet was a bad thing. Never the peaceful silence I wished for. No, she was planning something. Something unpleasant.

She cleared her throat. “Make her cry and I’ll tear you apart, capisce?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I got it.” I blew out a low breath. That was close to a miracle. I knew we were close to Christmas, but not that close, I hadn’t thought.

“Good. I’ve got to call that fucker, Foster. Call me later, fratello. Ti amo.”

“Ti amo, sorella.” I hung up before she could change her mind and rip into me. I wasn’t scared of a lot, but Tali on the warpath? Shudders wracked through me. She was freaking terrifying.

I almost felt bad for Foster Ambright.

Almost.

I slapped the power button for my computer and rushed from the office. Edi was just heading into his office as I sailed by.

“Where’s the fire, boss?” he asked as he turned to keep up with me.

“Nik’s awake.”

His silence was full of laughter. He cleared his throat. “That’s good. You can finally stop swearing at your computer like a little bitch.”

I didn’t bother to reply. He wasn’t wrong. Damnit.

“I’m going to go pick her up. Make sure you’ve got everything lock—”

My phone rang, interrupting me. I saw Jessa’s name flash across the screen. I gritted my teeth. “What’s wrong?”

“Everything is physically fine with Nik,” she said in a rush.

I exhaled. “Good. That’s good. What’s the problem?”

“She said her phone was unhackable. That she doesn’t have it set up for biometrics.”

I stopped abruptly. Turned to look at Edi.
